Mentoring: the leader and the walker

Working translation. Synchronized with the Russian corpus as of 2026-10-25. Canonical formulas are binding only in the Russian original; publication — after human review.

Why a mentor

A person holds not by doctrine — people hold by people. Two real bonds hold the walker better than any argumentation, and one honest bond often replaces a year of others' sermons. Mentoring is not control and not the teaching of a superior to a subordinate: it is the pair "leader — walker," where the leader is a step ahead on the road he has walked himself.

The name "leader" is conventional: the mentor does not lead and does not pull. He walks beside and shows his own road — including mistakes. "The walker" belongs to no one: he may change mentors, take two, take none — the route of the first month does not require a mentor, only recommends one.

Who may be a mentor

A member of the community who:

  1. has himself passed the route of the first month (not earlier than half a year after it — let the route settle);
  2. answers "explain" — about any practice of influence, about any decision, about any text;
  3. knows how to say "I don't know" and take the question to the elders instead of inventing an answer;
  4. leads no more than one walker at a time (quality matters more than reach; two — only when the first is already steady).

A mentor is not a rank and not a position: it is a ministry by strength. The ending of mentoring is not a failure and not a disgrace: a person may come out of the role, saying so to the circle at the Evening of Unity, and the walker receives a new mentor without a rupture.

What is in the ministry

  1. Presence. One conversation a week — in person or by phone. Not a sermon: the walker's questions, the mentor's honest answers.
  2. The conducting into the community. At the first Quiet Evenings the walker comes "with someone": a newcomer has the right to a familiar face in an unfamiliar room.
  3. The answer "why." To every text and rite — an explanation of how it is built, not authority: "that is what the canon says" is a weak answer, "here is why it is built this way" is a strong one.
  4. Silence about the diary. The walker keeps the diary of thoughts and deeds — the mentor never reads it. Even if the walker offers it himself. The diary is the property of the writer.
  5. Boundaries. The mentor does not take money from the walker, does not borrow from him, does not decide for him, does not begin a close relationship with him while the ministry lasts — the power of the position must not turn into the price of consent (commandment 9).

What the mentor does not do

The signs at which the pair is taken apart

The mentor stops the ministry and brings the case to the elders if he sees in the walker:

This is not the exclusion of the walker — it is the stopping of harm. "The community fences off from actions. The community does not fence off from desires," and certainly — it does not abandon the wounded.

How to match pairs

At the Quiet Evening or the Table, through the circle: the newcomer hears about the ministry and chooses himself with whom to speak. The walker chooses the mentor, not the reverse: the choice is the first experience that here no one is recruited. The pair is checked for a month: they did not fit — they part without explanatory tribunals, simply not a pair.

Mentoring in the network phase

Pairs are matched the same way — through the walker's choice, not the reverse. The difference is that the common "circle" is for now one: the dialog meeting (by personal invitation). The newcomer hears about the ministry there or from personal correspondence after the third meeting — and chooses himself with whom to speak.

What changes online:

  1. A conversation a week — by video or voice. Correspondence does not replace the voice: in text it is easy to lie and easy to hear wrongly. If the walker is not ready to turn on the camera — the voice is enough: the camera is obligatory for the leader, not for the walker.
  2. Silence about the diary — the same. The mentor does not read the diary of thoughts and deeds on paper, in a file, or in a shared document. Even if the walker offers it himself. The diary is the property of the writer.
  3. The boundaries of availability — named. The mentor names his hours and does not answer at night: personal resource is always limited, and a directly named boundary — a contribution by strength, not a cooling. The walker who needs "always and at once" receives an honest "I cannot — here is when I can."
  4. "To see" — does not mean to surveil. The mentor does not ask for screenshots, geolocation, reports of movements. Presence at meetings — by the walker's wish; absence — is not a disciplinary matter.
  5. A crisis — the same protocol. A threat to life and heavy psychiatry — outside pastoral competence: accompaniment to a specialist, do not abandon afterward. Online this means: know the city crisis lines of the walker and do not count correspondence as treatment.

The ending of online mentoring — the same without a tribunal: the pair did not fit — they part.

The formula

The leader does not lead — he walks beside.

The mentor answers not for the walker's fate but for the walker hearing all the time: one can always leave.

You brought a person — show how you did it — teach him to do the same for others.
